Malawi destroys expired Astrazeneca covid-19 vaccine

Ministry of health has disposed the expired covid-19 AstraZeneca vaccine a function that took place at Kamuzu central hospital

Presiding over the event Minister of health Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda said the exercise is in line with health policies and will help to instill confidence in the citizens

Kandodo Chiponda said Malawians should not be worried as there are still enough doses of the vaccine which they can get

“We have destroyed over 19, 000 expired Astrazeneca covid-19 vaccine and as per law various law enforcement agencies such as police, ant corruption bureau officers, officials of Ministry of finance and the media have witnessed the burning of the jabs to ensure transparency,” Kandodo Chiponda

In her remarks representative of civil society organizations in the health sector George Jobe said it is good that the vaccine has been destroyed as expected

Jobe who is also executive director of Malawi health equity network MEHN said they will continue sensitizing Malawians on the vaccines so that the misconceptions around it should be reduced

Malawi rejected the directive of World Health Organisation not to destroy the vaccine by claiming that it is safe to vaccinate the people
