Government to Borrow K112bn for Malawi Electricity Project

Government has said will borrow 112 billion Kwacha from International Development Association for Malawi Electricity access project.

This was revealed in parliament by Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development Joseph Mwanamvekha.

Mwanamveka said the bill is beneficial to the country because it will help to tackle energy problems, connect electricity to people in rural areas and create jobs among others.

“The electricity will be connected to 500 thousand households and increase access to power from 11 to 30 percent,” he said

Mwanamveka assured the August house that the money will be utilized transparently.

In his remarks, Member of Parliament for Lilongwe Mpenu, Eisenhower Mkaka, said MCP supports the bill but asked the minister to make sure that the money is used for the intended purpose.

He asked the Minister to provide a list of areas where the electricity will be connected in order to prevent politicizing the project
