Human Rights body cancels 28 May demo

Human Rights Defenders Coalition HRDC has postponed demonstrations that were slated for 28th May to force chairperson of Malawi Electoral Commission Justice Dr Jane Ansah to resign.

This follows the resignation of Ansah from her position last week and the president’s approval.
Speaking during a press briefing HRDC chairperson Gift Trapence said they have postponed the demonstrations because Ansah resigned.

“The remaining commissioners should step down threatening to hold demonstrations to state house if new ones are not appointed by 5th June.”

He said the attorney general is compromised therefore must not advise government on elections and resign.
On covid-19 Trapence said presidential taskforce is not addressing properly issues related to the pandemic.
