Lake Malawi turns green

Environmental expert has warned that the greening in some parts of Lake Malawi might pose serious challenges if not checked.

A Polytechnic based environmental lecturer Save Kumwenda said that the greening of the water occurs due to nutrients from fertilizers or sewers which are discharged into water bodies.

Kumwenda suggested that experts should conduct a research on how serious the situation is in Lake Malawi saying if left unchecked it can lead to death of fish and other living things.

“The lake is well known for its fresh water that attracts tourism therefore the greening might affect the sector,” Kumwenda
