Chiefs call for intensive child rights protection campaigns

Chiefs in Nkhotakota district have asked government and NGOs to intensify child rights protection campaigns if the country is to win the war against child rights violation.

The remarks were made during child rights protection awareness campaign at Kantchayeni village in the area of Traditional Authority TA Kanyenda in the district.

Speaking during the function village headman Kantchayeni said it is hard for the country to contain child rights violations because many people are not aware of what Malawi constitution entails on the protection of child rights.

“There is need for collaboration among different stakeholders fighting against child rights violations to increase awareness on child rights protection,” said TA Kanyenda.

Speaking at the same event crime prevention officer at Nkhota-kota police station Augustine Kaisi said although his office and its partners have managed to do several sensitization campaigns on child rights protection, child rights violation cases are still rampant in Nkhota-kota.

Kaisi attributed the problem to lack of knowledge among community members saying most of the people especially in remote areas have not been reached with child rights protection messages.

“I call upon stakeholders to end child rights violation in Nkhotakota, jointly work together with my office in addressing the matter,” Kaisi said.

The campaign was organized by Kanyenda Youth Action Committee through Nkhotakota Youth Organisation under youth participation and good governance project.
