DPP & UDF candidates win Malawi’s by-elections

Official results have shown that candidates of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party DPP and United Democratic Front UDF have been elected councilors for Malindi ward in Mangochi and Milonde ward in Mulanje.

The results indicate that in Malindi ward Cassim Limamu of UDF got 2735, Ambrose Hamisi of MCP 1060, Hassan Chikuta PP 878 and independent George Chiwaula 530 votes.

“Total votes cast were 5287, valid votes 5203 and null and void votes 84,” reads the statement of Malawi Electoral Commission.

In Milonde ward Mike Snikker of DPP got 2719 votes, MCP candidate Donata Nyanga 531, independent candidates Mabvuto Lackson 127, Leo Roy Pangani 140 and Cidreck Dickies Somanje 80 votes.

“All votes cast in Milonde ward were 3641, total valid votes 3597 while null and void 44 votes,” adds the statement

Meanwhile, one of the political analysts in the country has said it is not surprising that DPP and UDF have won in Mulanje and Mangochi by-elections.

Chancellor college lecturer Dr Mustapha Hussein said the two districts are the parties strong hold hence the win.

However Dr Hussein bemoaned acts of violence which marred the elections in Mulanje.

“Political parties should provide a conducive environment for campaign in order to have fair and free election,” Dr Hussein said

He also said the current political situation in the country shows that there can be stiff competition in 2019 tripartite elections.

The two by-elections in Mulanje and Mangochi districts were conducted following the death of their councilors last year.
