Government calls for abolishment of some cultural practices for gender equality

Ministry of Justice and constitutional affairs says there is need to abolish some of the cultural practices to improve Gender equality in the country.

Chief state advocate in the ministry, Pacharo Kayira said this in Lilongwe during a public lecture which was held under the theme “Creating public spaces for Gender equality in Malawi”.

Speaking at the event, Kayira said opportunities in the education should be for both girls and boys.

“I call for implementation of issues that will promote gender balance in all sectors of development,” Kayira said.

In her remarks, one of the gender specialists in Malawi Naomi Ngwira has said there is a lot to be done on gender inequality in the county.

However, Ngwira said there are some improvements such as programs that promote girl- child education by both government and stakeholders.
