Government introduces electronic village registers
Lilongwe district will pilot electronic village registers which will be containing records of people at village, group village, Traditional Authority and district level.
Public Relations Officer for National Registration Bureau (NRB) Norman Fulatila told stakeholders at Lilongwe District Council that the pilot project will be used to establish national identity data base from which national identity cards will be issued.
“Government in partnership with Baobab Health Trust will implement the project in the area of Traditional Authority Mtema in two phases before extending it to other Traditional Authorities and districts,” said Fulatira.
Executive Director for Baobab Trust Oliver Gadabu told the meeting that his trust is interested in helping government to establish a cost effective electronic register to facilitate registration and transmission of village registers across cultural hierarchy to district commissioners.
Gadabu said “chiefs will be issued with tablets for registration and solar electricity system to charge the tablets.”
Management Information Systems Officer for Lilongwe District Council Nephtale Chabuka while welcoming the project said there is great need to train chiefs and their clerks on how the system works to ensure flawless data base.
