Govt consults chiefs on flood victims relocation

Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DODMA) has said it is still consulting traditional leaders to provide land to families devastated by floods in Nsanje and Chikwawa districts.

Public Relations Officer for DODMA, Jeremiah Mphande said this to Radio Islam after media reports indicated that thousands of flood victims in the Lower Shire are starving in camps.

Mphande said his office is looking at a number of factors before reallocating to the upper land.

“DODMA is making sure that affected families are
allocated to areas close to social facilities like school, roads and hospitals,” said Mphande.

He assured the families remaining in camps that DODMA has adequate food and will not let them starve.
