Islamic Relief Malawi hands over school structures in Zomba

Islamic Relief Malawi (IRM) says is committed to support government efforts in improving education standards in Malawi.

This has been said at Malemia Full primary school in Traditional Authority Malemia, Zomba when IRM handed over two classroom blocks, a library, administration block and solar powered piped water at the school.

According to Islamic Relief country Representative Sharifa Mia, the project is wealthy 140 Million kwacha.

This has been said at Malemia Full primary school in in TA Malemia, Zomba where IR has donated two school blocks, a library, administration block, solar powered piped water at the school.

According to Islamic Relief country Representative Sharifa Mia, the project is wealthy 140 Million kwacha.

Mia told Radio Islam on Tuesday in Zomba that university students in UK donated the money to Islamic Relief through what they call Charity Week Campaign.

According to Islamic Relief UK Website, Charity Week began as an annual volunteer-led campaign launched by a group of students in London back in 2003.

Over 200 institutions raise vital funds for orphans and children in need in a range of countries suffering the effects of poverty and conflict.

She said Islamic Relief decide to use this donation to construct various facilities to Malemia FP school after noting the high school dropout rate in the area due to shortage of classrooms.

Mia said Islamic Relief Malawi discussed the issue with Zomba district education Manager’s office and chiefs in the area on how best they can address the challenge of school drop outs.

In his remarks, Zomba District Commissioner Emanuel Bambe concurred with Mia saying these infrastructures will help to uplift education standard in Zomba.

Bambe commended Islamic Relief for the kind gesture adding government needs such kind of partners to improve education standards in Malawi.

Meanwhile, the head teacher for Malemia Primary School Easther Chikaluma said she is very excited with the donation adding the facilities will ease the challenge of congestion at the school.

Chikaluma said the school has a capacity of over 8000 learners but some do not attend classes due to shortage of school blocks.

Islamic Relief Malawi has also rehabilitated other old school blocks, a kitchen, a shelter, constructed a sanitary room for girls among others
