MACRA Sensitises Malawians on Sim Card Registration

Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority MACRA has sensitized stakeholders in Mangochi on the mandatory sim-card and generic numbers registration campaign which is in progress.

During the meeting Consumer affairs manager for MACRA Ivy Chipezayani said the misconceptions which people have on the registration are not true.

“We thought of conducting the sensitization meeting in Mangochi because it is one of the districts where many people have been deceived by fraudsters when receiving money from their relatives in South Africa,” Chipezayani said.

Speaking in a phone interview public relations officer for Airtel Malawi Nora Chavula said her company only provides services to the general public not taping peoples call log.

Chavula said all officers at Airtel follow third code of ethics that promotes respect of customers’ privacy therefore anyone who breaks the rules faces dismissal.

“Airtel wants to register all Malawians including people, who are incapacitated, elderly and people with disabilities who will be assisted by their relatives as they have a right to register since they are citizens of this country,” explained Chavula.

Unregistered mobile phone users will be unable to communicate once the exercise.
