Malawi Commemorates Buy Malawi Strategy

UN Resident Coordinator Maria Jose has said her organisation is committed to support Buy Malawi Campaign for sustainable development of the country.

Jose said this on Friday during the commemoration of Buy Malawi Day in Lilongwe.

She said the initiative is very important since it helps to be self reliant and food insecure as farmers will be able to sell their produce.

Therefore Jose asked Malawians to support one another in order to improve their living standards.

Buy Malawi strategy was launched in 2016 and its first commemoration took place in 2017.

This year’s commemoration has been held under the theme “promoting Malawian products for national identity and sustainable economic development.

Speaking during the ceremony UN resident coordinator Maria Jose expressed her appreciation to the quality of Malawian products hence the need to promote them.

“It is important to open more markets for farmers in villages to sell easily their yields,” Jose said

In his remarks Buy Malawi Strategy executive committee chairperson Karl Chokotho said since the launch of the program a lot of groundwork has been carried out and is hopeful that it will help to change people’s mindset in economic development.

He added that the committee has also managed to develop a website for people to register for business use.

“But the committee lacks resources for smooth running of their activities,” Chokhotho lamented

Therefore, he encouraged consumers to support buy Malawi strategy by purchasing Malawians products.

Elizabeth Chikoya a representative of Lilongwe Textiles Cooperative and Tailoring said through buy Malawi strategy they receive a lot of customers from both small and big companies.

In his remarks Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development Goodall Gondwe encouraged local producers to continue with the good work which will lead to economic growth in the country.

Gondwe said farmers should engage with government to resolve some of the challenges they face.
