Malawi launches by-elections

Malawi Electoral Commission MEC has urged political parties and voters to fully participate in electoral processes.

The remarks come ahead of the launch of parliamentary and local government by-elections slated for October 17, 2017.

Speaking to radio Islam, MEC publicist Sangwani Mwafulirwa said political parties had been very active during the past by-elections adding such participation is crucial in smooth running of electoral and democratic processes.

Mwafulirwa said the launch on 16 August, 2017 will be held in six areas where the polls are expected to take place.

“The areas are Lilongwe Nsozi North Constituency, Mayani North Ward in Dedza, Lilongwe City South East Constituency, Mtsiliza Ward in Lilongwe City, Ndirande Makata Ward in Blantyre and Nsanje Lalanje Constituency in Nsanje district,”Mwafulirwa explained.

During meetings to launch parliamentary and local government elections MEC will also release the electoral calendar that outlines various activities.

MEC says during the launch political parties will be given the opportunity to express their views.
