Malawi President Removes Vice Presidency Post in Cabinet

President of Malawi Professor Peter Mutharika has reshuffled his cabinet effective November, 7 2018.

A press release signed by chief secretary to government Lloyd Muhara does not contain Ministerial post of Vice president Dr Saulos Chilima as was the case since the inception of multiparty democracy.

From 2014 Chilima has been the Minister responsible for management of disasters.

“However, Mutharika has removed the position of the vice president as Chilima is leading United Transformation Movement after resigning from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party,” reads the statement

The president has transferred the department of disaster management affairs which was under Chilima to Ministry of Homeland Security.

He has appointed DPP regional governor for the South Charles Mchacha as deputy Minister of the above mentioned Ministry.

However, he has fired Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development Anna Kachikho and deputy Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare Clement Mukumbwa.

“He has maintained Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development, Goodall Gondwe, Health and Population Atupele Muluzi, Justice and Constitutional Affairs Samuel Tembenu, Education Science and Technology Bright Msaka, Local Government and Rural Development Kondwani Nankhumwa, Foreign Affairs and International cooperation Emmanuel Fabiano, Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development Joseph Mwanamveka, Natural Resources, Energy and Mining Aggrey Masi and Transport and public works Jappie Mhango,” adds the statement

Minister of Information is Henry Mussa, Industry, Trade and Tourism Francis Kasaira,Labour, Youth Sports and Manpower Development, Civic Education, Culture and Community Development Everton Chimulirenji, Gender, children, disability and social welfare Cecilia Chazama and Lands, Housing and Urban Development Dr Jean Kalirani.

Meanwhile Mutharika has appointed Kalekeni Kaphale as attorney general replacing Charles Mhango who has resigned from the post.
