Malawi raises minimum wage

Ministry of Labour, Youth, Sports and Manpower Development has raised the statutory minimum wage with 22%.

According to the press statement made available to Radio Islam, the rate came up after consultative meetings with government officials, Malawi Congress of Trade Union (MCTU) and Employers Consultative Association on Malawi (ECAM).

The development means that the minimum wage has been adjusted to K962.00 from K797.70 per day.

The statement signed by Acting Principle Secretary, Joseph Mwandidya, says the changes are with effect from 1st July.

“The minimum wage serves the purpose of protecting the lowest paid workers from exploitation for the service they render,” says Mwandidya

However, government has encouraged both parties to negotiate for the higher rate.

The ministry has therefore warned all employers that anyone who pays below the minimum wage shall be liable for prosecution as provided for in Section 55 of the employment act.
