Malawi to conduct research on intellectual disability

Ministry of Gender, Disability and Social Welfare has admitted that lack of data on the number of people living with intellectual disabilities in Malawi is affecting service delivery.

This was said in Lilongwe during the official opening of the three day national workshop on intellectual disability in Malawi whose objective is to raise awareness on the same.

Speaking in an interview Minister of Gender Dr Jean Kalilani said her Ministry will conduct the research to know the exact number of people with intellectual disabilities.

“My Ministry will ensure that such people are accessing social services,” Kalirani promised

She expressed concern over reports that some parents are still locking up their children with disability.

Kalilani therefore directed police and chiefs to deal with this behavior.
