Ministry of health has advised district health officers DHO’s to be alert as the new polio virus has been detected in Mozambique.
In letter to all DHO’s chief of health services Dr Charles Mwansambo says World health organisation notified the ministry about the new detection of the virus in Molumbo district which shares international border with Phalombe district.
Dr Mwansambo says the virus may result into polio outbreak due to widening population immunity deficiency against polio.
“The ease of movement of persons between Malawi and Mozambique puts Malawi at risk of polio virus,” he said
Dr Mwansambo has therefore advised all health facilities to intensify active case search and conduct in-depth routine immunization.
