MISA-MALAWI asks govt to abolish archaic laws

Media Institute of Southern Africa – Malawi Chapter (MISA-MALAWI) has asked government to review all archaic deemed to be infringing the right to freedom of expression.

MISA-MALAWI Chairperson, Thom Khanje, made the appeal during the commemorations of this year’s World Press Freedom Day in Mangochi district.

Khanje said much as Malawians are pressing to pass the access to information bill, there are still other laws deemed to be archaic.

“Those laws are not in tandem with democratic principles,” said Khanje.

Khanje revealed that his organization is planning to establish a journalism college to build capacity within media fraternity.

In her remarks Minister of Information, Communication Technology and Civic Education, Patricia Kaliati, advised journalists to be certain when raising issues to government.

“By coming up with contradictory views on access to information bill is a clear indication that media practitioners are not conversant with the bill,” said Kaliati.

She however assured Malawians that government is doing everything possible to make sure that access to information bill is passed in parliament.
