Over 1.1 million Malawians register for national ids

National Registration Bureau NRB says has completed the process in two districts of Mchinji and Ntchisi.

Norman Fulatila, NRB publicist in an interview said the process is going on well and 1.1 million people have registered.

The whole process is expected to end in December this year.

“NRB will set up taskforce in Post offices and other areas where people who will attain 16 after the mass registration exercise will be registering,” said Fulatira.

Meanwhile, Malawi Electoral Support Network (MESN) has cleared fears that government has planned to use ongoing national identity cards registration process to rig 2019 tripartite elections.

Main opposition parties in the country have raised concerns after noting a number of disparities in the exercise.

But reacting to the matter, MESN Chairperson, Steve Duwa, said people are raising fears because they are not adequately informed on the matter.

“Malawi Electoral Commission will only use national identity data base as a prerequisite for one to register in voters’ roll,” explained Duwa
