Police arrests nurse for raping pregnant woman

Mulanje police is keeping in custody a nurse Arthur Chiutira for allegedly raping a patient in labour ward.

Public relations officer for Mulanje Police Gresham Ngwira confirmed to Radio Islam saying the incident occurred on Sunday 11th February 2018.

According to Ngwira “Chiutira is allegedly to have raped a pregnant woman when she went for check up claiming doing so will reduce the labour pains.”

Meanwhile, National Organization of Nurses and Midwives NONM says her organization is investigating the matter.

However, Executive Director for NONM Dorothy Ngoma says it is not possible for a patient to be raped in labour ward.

“It is difficult to trust such allegation because a nurse cannot rape a woman who is in labour pains,” said Ngoma.

She said such allegations will negatively affect the work of nurses in hospitals.
