Religious leaders for free and fair elections

Religious leaders in the country have urged candidates and citizens to join hands in praying for free and fair the forthcoming tripartite elections.

Chairperson of Malawi Councils of Churches Reverend Alex Benson Maulana made the call during the national interdenominational prayers for the first-ever Tripartite Elections in Blantyre.

Reverend Maulana said time has come for Malawians to repent their sins and asked Allah to give a good leader.

The national interdenominational prayers which organised by the Malawi Electoral Commission is aimed at praying for peace in the country as approaching to the polls on May 20, 2014.

The theme of the prayers is; Free, Fair and Peaceful Elections; Is Anything Too Hard For the Lord.

In his remarks chairperson for Malawi Electoral Commission Justice Maxon Mbendera commended political party leaders for attending the ceremony.

All presidential candidates attended the national interdenominational prayers, except Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate Professor Peter Mutharika.

Meanwhile, the Public Affairs Committee (PAC) has expressed optimistic that the Malawi Electoral Commission will hold credible free and fair tripartite elections.
