State Prosecutor recuses from Dr Muluxi corruption case

Future of the 1.7 billion kwacha corruption case which the former president Dr Bakili Muluxi is answering is in limbo as leader of the prosecuting team Leneck Matemba has recused himself due to personal reasons.

Matemba said the state will communicate the reasons and the development will not discontinue the case.

“I caanot disclose the reasons but Malawians will be informed by government,” Matemba said.

However, the other two lawyers in the prosecuting team Imran Saidi who is the lawyer for Ant-corruption Bureau,
Clement Mwala and the key witness Victor Banda did not go to Blantyre High Court.

Matemba told the court that Saidi’s contract has expired while Mwala was in Lilongwe representing another client.

Blantyre High Court Judge Maclean Kamwambe said the state seems to be disorganized.

“I adjourn the case to 12 May, when I will meet the two teams to map the way forward on the case,” said Kamwambe.

The defense team which comprises Tamnda Chokotho and Jai Banda asked the court to discharge the two accused because the state is making a lot of excuses.
