Strong winds and rains destroy houses in Machinga

Strong winds accompanied by heavy rains have blown off roofs of about 40 houses in Senior Chief Liwonde and Sub Chief Nsanama areas in Machinga district.

Assistant Disaster Risk Management Officer, Shepherd Jere confirmed the incident and said four children from Senior Chief Liwonde were injured as roofs fell on them.

“The assessment to establish extent of damage and a number of households affected is underway as churches are among buildings affected by the heavy winds,” said Jere.

He said The injured children are being treated at Machinga District Hospital.

Jere added that registration of the affected households is underway and no family has been completely displaced.

Machinga suffered similar disaster last rainy season.
