Voter Registration Results in Thyolo’s part not out

Results for voter registration in 6 centres in Thyolo district have not been released.

Chairperson of Malawi Electoral Commission justice Dr Jane Ansah revealed during a press conference on the results of five phases of voter registration exercise in Lilongwe.

MEC chairperson justice Dr Jane Ansah says there were technical challenges with the codes assigned to those centres.

“We are still resolving issues for Methiwa School, Namiyanga School, Ntawa School, Mpeni School, Milole School and Sukamayere School,” Ansah said

She says the registration figures could not be input directly into the database from the field.

However Ansah says the number of voters who have been registered in five voter registration phases has surpassed the projected figure.

She said the commission planned to register over five million people but recorded over 4 million eligible voters representing 81 percent.

“Over 2.5 million registrants are women representing 54 percent and over 2.1 million registrants are men representing 46 percent. She says the total for five phases is also 91 percent of those that registered in 2014 which was over 5.09 voters,” she explains.

Ansah further says of all the total registered voters for the five phases, the number of youths, aged less than 35 years, registered is over 2.5 representing 55 percent.

“Of the total sum for registered youths over 1.4 million females representing 55 percent and over 1.1 million are males translating into 45 percent,” adds MEC Chair

However, Ansah says the figures may change after removing duplicates and effecting transfers.

She has urged political parties to conduct primary elections in a fair and transparent manner.

Ansah said failure to mobilise enough vehicles from ministries, departments and agencies has put the Commission in an awkward situation.

The 6th phase is expected to roll out on 19th September 2018 in Mangochi Town, Mangochi district, Zomba city,Zomba district and Nsanje.
