MAM Calls For Prevention of HIV Transmission

Muslim Association of Malawi MAM has said Malawians should join hands in the fight against transmission of HIV AIDS.

Secretary General of MAM Alhaj Twaib Lawe said this during a symposium which CHAM conducted with religious leaders in Lilongwe.

Lawe said as Muslims they discourage behaviours that would lead to contraction of HIV therefore everyone must take a leading role in the fight against the malpractices.

Speaking during the meeting Alhaj Lawe encouraged all Malawians to follow instructions of doctors.

In his remarks CHAM acting executive director Dr Titha Dzowela said “the aim of the symposium was to bring together faith leaders to update them on new developments in HIV AIDS and how best they can work on issues of treatment, faith healing and stigma.”

Dzowera said faith leaders have a big role to play to ensure that their members get necessary information.

Commenting director of Department of HIV AIDS in the Ministry of Health and population Rose Nyirenda said “the issue of faith healing is negatively affecting people living with HIV AIDS as many of them are absconding medication.”

She then appealed to faith leaders to help I supporting the Ministry to promote HIV AIDS preventive behaviours.

The symposium was taking place under the theme “improving HIV AIDS care, treatment and support literacy among faith leaders and faith communities to address stigma and faith healing.”
