MANAD Calls for Sign Language Interpreters

Malawi National association of deaf MANAD has pleaded with government to promote sign language interpreters.

Speaking at a press briefing ahead of the commemoration of international day of the deaf, executive director Byson Chimenya said government promised to train 100 sign language interpreters but to date nothing has happened.

Chimenya said its members are facing challenges to access information due to shortage of interpreters

He then called upon Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority to force TV stations to have sign language interpreters.

Speaking earlier Advocacy Chair Blessings Phiri said Manad had been meeting government and some organizations to develop the dictionary which will make easy communication but no work done.

MANAD organized this year’s commemoration under the theme “sign language rights for all.”
