MEC Approves By-elections Candidates

Malawi Electoral Commission MEC has approved all candidates who submitted nomination papers to contest in by-elections in Lilongwe South Constituency and Matenje ward in Kasungu on 5 November.

Chief elections officer Sam Alfandika says the Commission met on October 17 among other issues to review the nomination papers received from aspiring candidates on October 16.

Alfandika says a total of ten nominations, all men, were received in the two areas where the by-elections will take place.

“For Lilongwe South Constituency, three candidates already met the criteria during the May 21tripartite elections and have indicated their intention to contest where as in Matenje Ward fresh nominations for all were administered,” he says

Alfandika further says having gone through all the nomination papers and supporting documents, the Commission has found that all candidates are eligible to contest.

He has reminded all stakeholders that a candidate can be disqualified at any point before polling if information is availed that could have led to disqualification during the nomination stage.

“Therefore the Commission is encouraging members of the public to come forward if they have justifiable evidence or information challenging the eligibility of the approved candidates,” Alfandika added

He says the information will be treated in confidence.

Meanwhile the official campaign period begun on 19th October and will end on 3rd November.

MEC Chief Elections officer says all candidates, traditional leaders and the media should adhere to electoral code of conduct they signed
