MEC urges media to think of greater good to society
Malawi Electoral Commission MEC has urged media managers to be thinking always of a greater good to the society and be sensitive to conflict triggers that may arise in the course of their reporting.
Chairperson of the commission Justice Dr Chifundo Kachale has said this during the opening of national conference on media and elections
Kachale said media managers should remain vigilant and ensure their work is not being manipulated to promote ambitions of the selfish few.
He commended and appreciated the important role the media played during the past tripartite and fresh presidential elections.
“The media helped educate the public and mobilized them to take active role in the two polls,” Kachale says
He further said the commission will continue to be on the lookout for any traits that might attempt to swerve the media from its right course.
The MEC chair said joint efforts are very crucial to overcome voter apathy and challenges in voter turnout in elections.
Kachale said there is need to mobilize the citizenry and help them appreciate democratic as well as civic responsibility to participate actively in elections.
