Minister appeals to courts, police not to give bail to defilement suspects

Minister of gender, Community development and social welfare Patricia Kaliati has pleaded with police and courts not to give bail to all bail to all perpetrators of rape and defilement

Kaliati made the remarks during Malawi’s Global Fund Program on HIV and Tuberculosis grant closure media event that was organized by Action Aid

“Giving bail the suspects of defilement is making the vice to rise as many people are doing it with the hope that they will be granted bail,” Kaliati

Kaliati applauded Action Aid for implementing the project which has empowered economically girls and women

She encouraged different organizations to take the responsibility of dealing with gender based violence

In his speech Action Aid executive director Assan Golowa said despite the challenges faced they have made several achievements as they have reached out to people especially in rural areas with information on HIV and TB

Golowa said they will engage different stakeholders to implement activities against gender based violence
