Ministry requests schools that closed first term to follow harmonized academic calendar

Ministry of education has requested schools that have closed first term to follow the harmonized academic calendar

In a public announcement acting secretary for education Raphael Agabu says all schools that have not followed the calendar risk revocation of their licences

Agabu states that some schools especially private ones have already closed for term one and will be opening in April

“The first term of 2021 academic calendar ends on 7th May therefore all public and private schools should abide by that,” Agabu

The first term was opened on 4 January but was closed due to new wave of covid-19 to prevent further spread of the new strain from South Africa

However government reopened the schools on 8 March but teaching and learning was disrupted by the stay away strike of teachers which was organised by teachers union of Malawi to force Ministry of education give them covid-19 risk allowances

But presidential task-force disapproved the teachers request after the Ministry promised to give them funds meant for the procurement of personal protective equipment

Meanwhile TUM threatened to resume the strike after 7 days which ended on 1 April 2021
