Rains Destroy Chikwawa District Council

Severe hailstorm and heavy rains have destroyed office complex, equipment including computers and IFMIS data centre at Chikwawa district council.

Spokesperson of Ministry of Local government and rural development Mushawase Muwowo has confirmed to Radio Islam after the principal secretary in the ministry toured the council, Chikwawa prison and affected villages.

Muwowo said the disaster has damaged roofs, windows and doors of the council offices leaving computer servers completely submerged in water.

She added that the Council’s rest house, 3 male prison cells and 1 female cell have had their roofs blown off.

Muwowo said extent of the damaged will be reported after a thorough assessment is completed.

In a related development, strong winds have destroyed police houses at Zomba police collage.

Eastern region police publicist Joseph Sauka has confirmed the development.

According to Sauka the strong winds which occurred at 4 o’clock on Sunday have also damaged some of the collage’s offices.

However, he said investigations are still on to establish the total damage.
