UNFPA Commends Radio Islam For Educating People On Fistula

UNFPA has commended Radio Islam for educating the nation on the problem of fistula.

Grace Hiwa of UNFPA made the remarks when presenting a report on how Mangochi is performing on community access to reproductive health rights to the district executive committee.

Hiwa said Radio Islam is doing a commendable job as it is broadcasting about fistula which is encouraging women who have the problem to get treated.

She encouraged Radio Islam to continue sensitizing people in the country about fistula.

Hiwa said their findings indicate that teenage pregnancies have increased by 8.4 percent; fistula by 3 percent and physical violences by 21 percent in Mangochi.

She cited delay to access health care during pregnancy, lack of economic independence and respect to rights of women and girls as some of the contributing factors.

Hiwa said there is need for adolescent girls and women to access adequate information on preventing early pregnancies and respecting their rights.

Commenting Mangochi district environmental officer Kondwani Mamba said there is need for collaborative efforts among partners for Mangochi to do well in the uptake of reproductive health rights.
