President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has inaugurated Tedzani 4 power plant which will produce 19 megawatts with an aim of increasing the country’s electricity grid.
Speaking during the commissioning of the Plant at Tedzani in Chikwawa Chakwera said should Malawi fail to produce enough energy the country will not be able to fulfill vision 2063 of making a middle income Nation.
He says if the country does not produce enough electricity people will continue to use fire wood for cooking which affects the environment and the development.
“Malawi has suffered electricity blackouts for too long adding that it’s now time this becomes history,” Chakwera
According to the president, the commissioning of Tedzani 4 power plant will create job opportunities for people living around the area.
Speaking during the function board chairperson of Electricity Generation Company EGENCO Zangazanga Chikhosi said the inauguration of Tedzani 4 power plant is part of their vision to trickle power generation in the next 12 years.
Chikhosi said since EGENCO started operation in 2017, 77 megawatts have been added to the power grid though development of new power plants like Tedzani 4, Likoma solar power plant and diesel generation plant.
He said they are restoring life to machines which were installed 20 years ago as they are archaic in order to be providing sufficient, affordable and reliable electricity
“EGENCO is focusing on the 2018 to 2033 strategy to reach over 1600 megawatts by aligning the plan to government manifesto in energy sector and diversify sources of energy from hydropower to others such as solar, coal, gas and wind,” Chikhosi
In his remarks ambassador of Japan to Malawi Satochi Yiwakiri said Tedzani Power plant has been constructed with a grant from his country
