BCC to relocate people in hills, along rivers and roads

Blantyre City Council (BCC) says is contemplating of relocating people who settle in hills, along rivers and roads.

Acting Chief Executive Officer for BCC, Lyton Nkata, disclosed the plans during the tree planting exercise organized by Coordination Union for the Rehabilitation of Environment (CURE) held at Bangwe hills.

Nkata said currently, the city is consulting all stakeholders including the community to come up with a constructive solution to the problem.

On his part, Chairperson for CURE, Menard Nyirenda, said they decided to plant trees in Bangwe hills in order to restore the forest and protect from flash floods as well as mudslides.

Nyirenda added that Bangwe hills is a main source of water for people around hence bringing back the forest will in one way help people continue benefiting from the hill.
