New Maize buying price in Malawi K200/kg

Ministry of agriculture and food security has released minimum farm gate prices for selected crops for the 2019 to 2020 agricultural season

Announcing the prices in Lilongwe Minister responsible Francis Kasaira said maize will be bought at 200 kwacha per kilogram.

Kasaira says government has give money to ADMARC to start buying maize this Thursday 9th April in all markets in the southern region including Ntcheu district.

“The Ministry expects that ADMARC will open markets on 20th and 27th April for maize purchased for the central and northern regions respectively,” says Kasaira

He has asked all agro-dealers, agro-processors and other stakeholders dealing with marketing to adhere to the set prices.

Kasaira says anyone who wants to buy the crops from farmers must have a licence.

However for selected commodities the cooperation will open markets earlier in central region.

Kasaira has warned the traders that if found buying the crops at a price below the set minimum price will be dealt with accordingly.

Commenting, Farmers Union of Malawi (FUM) president Frighton Njolomole has expressed satisfaction with the farm gate prices.

Speaking to Radio Islam Njolomole said Corona Virus (COVID-19) has huge negative impact to their marketing process.

He has appealed to farmers to follow preventive measures of corona virus during the process.
