Malawi’s former president to contest 2019 elections

Former president of Malawi Dr Joyce Banda has announced that she will contest in 2019 elections.

Dr Banda declared during a political rally at Nyambadwe ground in Blantyre.

Banda urged eligible voters to register for next year’s elections and vote for people who will develop the country regardless of their age.

“I will contest at People’s party convention and in next year’s polls,” disclosed Banda.

She reminded Malawians to avoid political violence.

Speaking at the same rally vice president of PP Kamlepo Kaluwa said they are optimistic that the party will win next year’s elections.

Meanwhile, Chancellor college based political analyst Dr Mustapha Hussein has said the declaration that former president Dr Joyce Banda will contest in next year’s elections will empower more women to compete.

“Participation of many women in 2019 polls will promote 50:50 campaign,” Dr Hussein said.

Dr Joyce Banda return to Malawi after 4 years of self imposed exile.

She fled the country after losing to incumbent president professor Peter Mutharika in 2014.
