
High court in Lilongwe has suspended sentencing of principal secretaries PS’s in the ministries of finance and agriculture who were found guilty of contempt of court to 19th August.
Cliff Chiunda and Grey Nyandule Phiri were convicted for not apologizing to the public on misprocurement of farm equipment and irregular disposal of 177 tractors which were bought in one village one product OVOP project for small holder farmers
The Sonalika Tractors which were bought using 50 million Dollars approximately 37 million kwacha borrowed funds were sold to politicians and high ranking officials at a cheaper price.
Speaking to reporters at Lilongwe High court lawyer of the principal secretaries Chancy Gondwe said he applied for a stay of the sentence because hearing of the case took place in their absence.
“I do not agree that his clients were in contempt of court because they had not been provided chance to state their side of the story,” said Gondwe
