Police units burnt in Blantyre

Minibus drivers in some parts of Blantyre have demonstrating against stiff penalties imposed on those found contravening traffic regulations.

For instance in Machinjiri Township the demonstrators blocked the road by stones and burning tyres.

Police reacted by firing teargas to disperse them.

“Meanwhile, the protesters have burnt two police units in Machinjiri Township,” said the eye witness.

According to eye witnesses the demonstrators burnt them because police fired teargas at Nkolokoti primary school.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that in Ndirande township two children have died of teargas.
