Malawi-Tanzania presidents didn’t discuss Lake Malawi Dispute

President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has said he did not discuss Lake Malawi dispute with Tanzania president John Magufuli.

Chakwera said this as many people were expecting that the dispute will be among the issues they would discuss.

He said they will discuss this amicably after establishment of cordial relationship between the two presidents.

“It is not proper to discuss sensitive issues before discussing pertinent issues which are very beneficial to people of the two countries,” Chakwera said

He further said the trip and discussions with Magufuli were very successful and fruitful to the two countries.

Chakwera said he did not put on face mask because that country had reached advanced stage in the fight against corona virus

Commenting, Political scientists commended Chakwera for emphasizing on improving diplomatic relations with neighboring Tanzania other than Lake Dispute.

Speaking in separate interviews, George Phiri of Livingstonia University and Lilongwe based Vincent Kondowe say Malawi stands to benefit a lot economically by improving relations with Tanzania as Malawi uses its ports for most of her imports.

“It’s too early for President Chakwera to concentrate on Lake Malawi dispute,” said Phiri

Concurring with Kondowe, Phiri said it is beneficial for Malawi to improve diplomatic relations with Tanzania other than concentrating on Lake dispute.

Phiri added that benefits of fruitful diplomatic relations outweigh gains Malawi can make if she puts emphasis on lake ownership, hence commending Chakwera for his position.
