Parliament calls Ministry to raise farm gate prices

Farmers Union of Malawi FUM has welcomed a call by Parliament to the ministry of agriculture to revise upwards this year’s farm gate prices.

Speaking in an interview with Radio Islam, FUM president Flighton Njolomole says considering the devaluation of Malawi kwacha and increase in fuel prices things have gone up hence the need to raise farm gate prices.

Njolomole’s sentiments come a day after parliamentary committee of Agriculture asked ministry of agriculture to revise upwards farm gate prices.

According to its chairperson, Sameer Suleman, if farmers continue to sell at the current prices they will not have the purchasing power to procure farm inputs in next growing season.

Njolomole says the prices should be raised so that farmers can prepare well for the 2022 to 2023 farming season
