Women groups demonstrate against President’s few women appointment

Various women groups have demonstrated against Tonse government appointment of few women in parastatal boards

Speaking during the demonstrations in Blantyre representatives of the groups threatened to take legal action if President Dr Lazarus Chakwera does not reverse the appointment which violates 40:60 agenda as stipulated in gender equality act

Maggie Kathewera Banda of Women Manifetso Movement said women groups have been meeting Dr Chakwera as leader of opposition and state president on the need to appoint more women but this is not the case now

“Tonse government and the president are violating rule of law as well as their promises,” said Kathewera Banda

In her remarks Ngeyi Kanyongolo representing feminist network said women do not need to wait for years to be given positions as argued by others

Kanyongolo also agrees with Banda on taking the case to courts since the country’s leadership is adamant to listen to their concerns.

In Blantyre demonstrators were few but commenting on law turnout Kathewera Banda attributed this to the fact that previous demonstrations were characterized by violence hence women were afraid to show up in large numbers.

Banda however commended men for joining the demonstrations in Blantyre

Director of human resources at civic centre Alfred Nyengo has meanwhile received the petition
