BMGF gives Blantyre over K1b for public conveniences

Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) has given Blantyre City Council (BCC) over 1 billion kwacha for the rehabilitation and construction of more public conveniences within the city.

Blantyre City Council (BCC) publicist, Anthony Kasunda said the city council has not been idle regarding sanitary issues as other individuals have perceived it but it has always been looking around for financial and material aid for the same hence the positive nod from BMGF.

“I assure Blantyre residents and visitors that toilet rehabilitation and construction programme would take about three years to complete so that come 2018 all people should start benefitting from the long awaited project,” Kasunda disclosed.

However, he was quick to clarify that currently the toilet and sanitary related issues are being fully operated and managed by the private hands whose daily levies are remitted to the council.

Kasunda further stated that once completed toilets shall be handed over to the private partners for sustainable management whilst at the same time instilling ownership and observance of general hygiene among the residents.
