Floods displace over 400 in Karonga

Flooding of North Rukuru River following heavy rains has displaced over 473 households in the area of Group Village Heads Zindi and Mweniyumba in the area of Paramount Chief Kyungu in Karonga District.

The floods which have destroyed several houses and swept away household properties were triggered by heavy rains that have been falling in the district for the past two days.

District Disaster Risk Management Officer for Karonga Shepherd Jere said so far, no life has been lost but one woman has been injured as the house walls fell on her.

He said that the council has embarked on an assessment exercise to establish the extent of the damage.

Chairperson for Karonga District Council, Isaac Kalambo said the council officials are yet to visit the affected areas.

The flooding has occurred four days after Department of Disaster Management Affairs sent an alert that some districts along the lake shore would experience river flooding.
