Government Distributes Relief Items To Victims Of Rains

Government has distributed relief items to 269 households who were affected by heavy rains in Mangochi district in November, this year.

Speaking during a symbolic ceremony in Ngoi Village Senior Chief Mponda where 58 households were affected by the disaster, Minister of Homeland Security and Disaster Management Nicolous Dausi said government thought of distributing the relief in order to comfort the affected families.

Dausi asked people who are residing in prone areas in Mangochi to move to safe places.

“The communities to plant more trees during this rainy season as it acts as wind shield hence protecting them from disasters,” he said.

Dausi however warned council officers to avoid favoritism in any government relief program as they aim at reaching out to the needy.

Commenting, Mangochi district commissioner Mosses Chimphepo applauded the ministry for responding to the calamity.

Chimphepo said “43 households were affected in traditional authority Chowe, 51 in Chilipa, 18 in Katuli and 99 in Makanjira.”

He mentioned that 9 people sustained minor injuries and were treated as out-patients and 6 classroom blocks were heavily damaged, affecting over 2,310 learners in the district.
