Government laments low participation of leaders in combating deforestation

Nkhota-kota forest office has bemoaned low participation of local leaders in the fight against deforestation in the district.

The district forestry officer George Zibophe made the remarks during the commemoration of International Day of Forest in the district.

According to Zibophe his office is still struggling to combat charcoal burning and wanton cutting down of trees due to among others lack of joint efforts among duty bearers.

“Deforestation has negatively impacted cultural, social and environmental aspects on people’s livelihoods as well as management and protection of forests,” Zibophe articulated.

He therefore urged people in the district to be active in environmental conservation saying deforestation is a national concern hence the need for everyone to participate.

Commemoration of international day of forest was held under the theme forests and sustainable cities.
