Karonga Muslims plead with well wishers to complete their masjids

As Karonga is expected to receive heavy rains in February and March according to Meteorological department, office of Muslim Association of Malawi in the district has appealed to well wishers to assist it with funds or materials to complete some masjids which are still under construction.
Chairperson of Muslim Association of Malawi in Karonga Abdul Razak Mtenje said was deeply concerned with the condition of some of them.
Mtenje regarded the problem as an emergency that needs immediate response.
Speaking after visiting various masjids with our reporter Mtenje claimed that the masjids will easily collapse if the heavy rains fall in the coming two months.
Mtenje commended all individuals who commit themselves in supporting various activities in some masjids in Karonga which have prevented their destruction by hailstorms which hit the district early this month.
According to him the masjids which need urgent help are Wovwe and Chilumba because are located in disaster prone areas.
The aim of the tour was to warn Islamic leaders in all masjids in Karonga about the predicted heavy rains which will fall in February and March as well as inspecting their areas.
Meanwhile Karonga district commissioner Rosemary Moyo has asked chiefs in the district to remove people who are living around flood prone areas areas to the upper land.
Speaking to this radio Moyo said the district has in-adequate relief items therefore it is better to prevent the disaster.
She also advised farmers to practice good agricultural practices and plant crops that mature early during this time of hailstorms and floods.
