M1 road construction delays, contractors ordered to redesign

Minister of transport and public works has said the construction of M1 road has delayed because government directed the contractors to redesign their work

Speaking during the press briefing entitled “connecting the dots for development” Jacob Hara said the directive was made in order to have a durable and safe road

On Lake Shore road, Hara said the contractor is on the site and the designers are working on Liwonde-Zomba road project which will be financed by World Bank

The minister said government has planned various development activities to improve railway transport across the country

He added that the ministry plans to rehabilitate substandard road in Karonga which the previous government constructed

Though the minister said government has enough money to do road works he did not disclose the actual figure

Hara stated that the ministry resolved disagreements with Water boards and ESCOM over the cutting of roads

The transport minister said they are changing the system of hiring contractors to have good roads and embarked on the project of buying equipment to lend local contractors
