Malawi capital city has new mayor

A Malawi Congress Party Councilor for Chigoneka ward Desmond Bikoko has been elected the new mayor of Lilongwe City.

Bikoko competed with Akwame Bandawe of DPP and has won by 15 votes.

In his acceptance speech, Bikoko promised to transform Lilongwe saying the city lacks guidance in terms of development.

“As mayor will be impartial and work with people of different parties as well as businesspersons,” said Bikoko.

Bikoko has replaced mayor William Chapondera.

The councilors have also voted for Juliana Kaduya as deputy mayor.

Kaduya won the vote by 17 votes against Christopher Namakhwa’s 14.

“I thank my fellow councilors for voting me into the position,” Kaduya said.

31 Councillors were eligible to vote but two were not allowed as they did not follow right procedures.
