Malawi President goes to EU-AU summit after appearing in parliament
President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has left the country for Belgium where he will attend the 6th European Union- African Union Summit.
According to Chakwera the summit will lay the foundations of a renewed partnership between the two continents.
” EU-AU will provide public and private investment capacity, as well as expertise with the green infrastructure and technologies that are vital for the fight against climate change and to transform African economies,” Chakwera
Earlier in the day, Chakwera appeared in parliament where he was rescued from answering questions that boulder on politics and his future in politics.
This is the third time for Chakwera to appear in parliament to answer questions.
Though the questions which the president answers are already presented before his appearance in the house in the 1st and half hours he is allocated, some members of parliament took the opportunity to ask the president questions outside the order.
Rising on a supplementary question, Member of Parliament for Phalombe Central asked the president to clarify on the whereabouts of Anti-Corruption Bureau ACB Director Martha Chizuma, whom he said has not been seen since he met the president over the leaked audios.
However, speaker Catherine Gotani Hara said Chakwera was under no obligation to answer the question since it was paused as a supplementary on a different matter which was under discussion.
Member of Parliament for Rumphi East Kamlepo Kalua also asked as to whether the president will resign since he promised to step down if he underperforms.
However, leader of the House, stepped in when he asked the speaker if the standing orders allow the president to tackle questions outside business.
Later speaker Catherine Gotani Hara agreed with Chimwendo that it was against the standing orders.
Earlier, Member of Parliament for Mzimba North Yeremiah Chihana was asked by speaker of the house to take his seat following his insistence to answer to remarks which President Chakwera said when he criticized some members of opposition including Chihana and leader of opposition Kondwani Nankhumwa.
After the meeting was curtailed, one Member of Parliament asked the speaker to remember an order she gave earlier that leader of the house furnishes the house with evidence on allegations he made that Dr Chakwera appointed corrupt cabinet ministers.
Hara however, said Nankhumwa has until the end of business today to provide the evidence.
