Malawi’s voter registration phases for 2019 tripartite elections revised.

Voter registration phases for next year’s tripartite elections have been revised.

Malawi electoral commission MEC has made the revision after concerns by various stakeholders regarding the use of national Identity document on identification of voters during voter registration.

MEC Chief elections officer Sam Alufandika says during demonstration of biometric voter registration stakeholders raised a concern regarding the placement of national registration bureau NRB staff in strategic centres.

“Considering the concerns the commission has decided to place NRB teams in all voter registration centres,” Alufandika said.

He further says the commission has approached government and development partners to provide additional resources to meet this new proposal.

“Therefore NRB teams will register all eligible voter registrants who have not registered with the bureau before,” added Aludandika

Following this arrangement the phases for voter registration have been revised to 8 from 6 to run from June 26 to November 9 2018.
